Thirty student-athletes from the Greater Victoria area set to begin new school year
The Canadian Sport School Victoria is set to begin the 2018-19 school year with thirty student-athletes from throughout the Capital Regional District (CRD).
This year’s class is composed of 16 returning students and 14 first-time attendees, who compete in 16 different sports. They include students in grades 9-12 from 13 different high schools.
Returning students include cyclist Riley Pickrell (Claremont, Grade 12), who had three stage wins at Junior World Cup Tour of Abitibi last season and came in 4th in the 2018 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships Scratch Race; and weightlifter Georgia Cameron (SIDES, Grade 12) who won silver at the 2018 Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships.
New students for this year of CSS Victoria include rower Marissa Murray (Claremont, Grade 12), who made the Canadian Junior National Rowing Team and won silver in the Women’s eight at the CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico this past July; and her classmate and teammate rower Spencer Thomas (Claremont, Grade 12), who also brought home silver in the eights at the CanAmMex Regatta.
The Canadian Sport School is an important initiative of the Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, delivered in partnership with PacificSport and Engage Sport North or viaSport Regional Alliance. With campuses located in Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George, the program provides assistance for secondary school aged student-athletes who are balancing their educational and training demands.
The Canadian Sport School Victoria is in its eighth year of operation.
