Purpose:
- To facilitate a discussion on how we are preparing for and managing crisis in high performance sport.
- To explore strategies needed in dealing with crises in high performance sport.
- Identify best practices in dealing with the unfortunate but inevitable reality of crisis in sport.
What are the best practices in dealing with the unfortunate but inevitable reality of crisis in sport?
This session focused on understanding how crises can impact athlete and coaches and identify strategies that can be used by coaches and technical leaders to effectively deal with traumatic incidents.
We explored:
- What is crisis?
- What is Crisis Management?
- What strategies do you have in place in your HP program?
Part 1. Setting the scene
Ask Group some questions, such as:
- How would you define crisis?
- What are the different types of ‘crises’ you may experience in your sport?
- Have there been any past events/ crisis that helped shape your current systems?
- Do you have any control over the event or crisis… or managing the crisis?

- Why / how to plan for a crisis
- Difference between an issue / incident and crisis
- Importance of establishing a chain of command
- Who should make up a crisis management team
- Integrated communications plan (highlight the components that should be covered in a plan)
- Importance of discussing / practicing what to do in the event of a crisis
- I was going to end the session with a table top exercise (involving the participants) that will drive home the points discussed earlier

Facilitated discussion around checklists/ templates and tools through CSI Pacific. What is your crisis action plan or checklist?
The key take-away is for the participants to either generate a checklist or action plan that would deal with the unexpected.
