CALGARY – The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, announced today increased funding to the Athlete Assistance Program (AAP). The investment will increase annual funding by an additional $5 million for a total of $33 million, which represents an 18 percent increase.
The cost associated with preparing and competing in international sport is significant. This first increase in AAP funding in 14 years will help alleviate some of the financial pressure for approximately 1900 athletes across Canada.
The Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSI Network) sees first-hand the impact of the investment in our athletes. “The AAP truly contributes to the pursuit of excellence. The funds are dedicated for training and living expenses, in addition to tuition support. It ensures that athletes are prepared to compete on the field of play and are also prepared for life in their post sport career,” says Dale Henwood, President and CEO of the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary.
The COPSI Network applauds the decision of the Government of Canada as they continue to invest and support high performance athletes on their journey to the podium.
