Canadian Sport Institute Ontario recently hosted Own the Podium’s annual SPIN Summit at our main facility at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. The conference, which focuses on sport science, sport medicine and sport innovation, was attended by over 250 leading practitioners, researchers and innovators from across the country and the United States. The day of sessions at CSIO saw presentations and demonstrations in our Strength & Conditioning area, the Sport Lab – specifically in the K2Room Altitude Chamber and the Anthropometry Room, and the Sport Performance Kitchen, as well as classroom and interactive sessions in CSIO’s boardroom and throughout the TPASC facility.
SPIN Summit participants were welcomed by Dr. Ira Jacobs, Professor & Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto and Chair of the TPASC Board of Directors. Dr. Jacobs spoke to the importance of the facility as a Legacy of the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games and its use as not only a community centre and university athletic centre, but as a state-of-the-art high performance training centre, touching on the commitment and leadership of CSIO’s President and CEO, Debbie Low for her vision in bringing CSIO’s daily training environment to life.

The recipients of this year’s Awards were Matt Jordan, Director S&C at Canadian Sport Institute Calgary; Matt Jensen, a student at the University of Victoria; and Sylvain Gaudet, a PhD student at the University of Montreal.
The conference wrapped up the following day at the host hotel, with plenary sessions that addressed the Summit’s theme of Sustaining Olympic and Paralympic Podium Performances, hot topics in research and a performance on demand session highlighting Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s with Academy Director Mike Frogley, player Bo Hedges and IST lead and CSIO Mental Performance Consultant Dr. Judy Goss.
